The medical system sucks and so does this capitalistic society that we live in. Therapy isn’t always affordable to folks even with some government and community support programs in place. I myself have struggled to afford health insurance and therapy needs in the past. The 2024 political climate has brought up a lot of uncertainty over what may happen to the medical system, medical services, and economy, which will have the biggest impact on those who are marginalised and may have difficulty affording care as it is.

This fund’s purpose is to make quality therapy services more affordable for marginalised folks, specifically those who identify as BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA+. The fund will prioritise those identities, but wont exclude others.

Akula therapy is NOT a non-profit, due to many barriers and requirements, which means that donations cannot be claimed as deductions on your taxes. Non-profit may be a future endeavor.

Money raised since Feb 2025: $490
Therapy sessions supported: 14

 FAQs

  • The money goes directly towards covering mental health services for individuals and couples who have financial barriers. This also allows for more sliding scale options.

  • The process to become and maintain a non profit requires a lot of paperwork and management. It also requires a board of members to oversee the non-profit. With Akula therapy being small and run by a single person, being a non-profit isn’t appropriate at this time. It may be a possibility in the future.

  • BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ folks are prioritised, but the fund isn’t limited to those identities. Clients will have to go through a consultation process to see if they qualify.

  • I love statistics and numbers, so I will definitely keep people updates on how many people benefit from this fund and how your contributions help our community!

  • Yes! I will be planning to host healing events and community events for both general public and mental health practitioners. If it’s free, donations will be accepted. If it’s a ticketed event, all profits will go towards this fund.
